Top 5 activities for Women’s Day 2025 in Berlin

17. February 2025
Frauentag in Berlin

This year, International Women’s Day falls on a Saturday – it has even been an official public holiday in Berlin for several years now. There are numerous events to encourage all the women among you in particular to spend a weekend in the capital! And as good news rarely comes alone, we have put together an attractive arrangement for you at the end of the article for Women’s Day at Louisa’s Place – it’s worth a look, ladies!

The meaning of Women’s Day

International Women’s Day, which is celebrated on 8 March, is a powerful symbol of the decades-long struggle for women’s rights and equality. Originally created to draw attention to the challenges and discrimination faced by women in many societies, this day has an inspiring history dating back to the early 20th century.

In Berlin, where Women’s Day is celebrated with particular vigour, events and demonstrations commemorate the achievements of the feminist movement as well as the inequalities that still exist. The day serves not only to honour the courage and commitment of women, but also to motivate new generations to stand up for equality and justice. It is an opportunity for all people – regardless of gender or background – to come together and show solidarity in the quest for a better future for all women worldwide.

Why is Women’s Day a public holiday in Berlin?

In the former GDR and its capital Berlin, 8 March was officially celebrated as ‘Women’s Day’ to honour women’s equality. Traditionally, red carnations were given to women and the state and party leadership awarded the annual Clara Zetkin Medal to honour women’s initiatives in the world of work and society.

As Berlin had the lowest number of public holidays in the year compared to the other federal states, on 24 January 2019, the Berlin House of Representatives passed a majority motion for an additional public holiday on 8 March. Berlin was thus the first federal state to establish International Women’s Day as a public holiday and the city is now celebrating this day more than ever before!
