Hotel standards in Germany: What do the stars mean?

The number of stars a hotel has can make the difference between a simple stay and a luxurious experience. But what is really behind this classification and the associated expectations of comfort, service and quality?

The origin of the hotel rating system

The hotel rating system has its roots in the early 20th century, when travel guides and automobile clubs began to classify hotels to guide travellers. The star rating quickly became a standardised system that was adopted by various organisations around the world.

In Germany, star classification is carried out by Deutsche Hotelklassifizierung GmbH, a subsidiary of the German Hotel and Restaurant Association (DEHOGA). This organisation plays a crucial role in ensuring that the standards for hotel ratings are uniform and transparent. Deutsche Hotelklassifizierung GmbH works closely with various industry experts to regularly review and adapt the criteria to meet the changing expectations and needs of travellers. This enables guests to make informed decisions that meet their individual needs and preferences.

Criteria for the star classification

The criteria for star classification are varied and cover a wide range of aspects. They ensure that the assessment of a hotel is comprehensive and fair. These include room facilities, which refer to the quality and comfort of the furniture, the size of the rooms, the availability of amenities such as minibar, safe and luxury bed linen. Service quality is another key factor, which assesses the professionalism and friendliness of the staff, the efficiency of the check-in and check-out process and the hotel’s ability to cater to individual guest requests. Cleanliness is an essential criterion that includes hygiene in the rooms, public areas and catering facilities.

The facilities on offer also play an important role and can range from simple breakfast options to extensive wellness and fitness areas, conference rooms and luxurious spas. A 1-star hotel offers the most basic amenities necessary for a simple and functional stay, such as a clean bed and basic sanitary facilities. In contrast, a 5-star hotel must guarantee the highest level of luxury and excellent service, offering guests an unforgettable experience.

What makes a 5-star hotel

A 5-star hotel must fulfil the highest standards. This includes luxuriously furnished rooms and suites, one or more first-class restaurants, a comprehensive wellness and fitness programme and a concierge service that is available around the clock.

Other features include personalised services, a high staffing ratio for individual guest care and exclusively bookable additional services such as a transfer or limousine service.

How many 5-star hotels are there in Germany at the moment?

There are currently over 100 hotels in Germany that have been awarded 5 stars. These are located in major metropolises such as Berlin, Munich and Hamburg as well as in popular holiday regions such as the Black Forest or the Baltic Sea coast.

The high density of 5-star hotels in Germany reflects the high demand for luxurious accommodation and demonstrates the quality and diversity of the German hotel industry.

Why the stars are not everything

Although stars are a good guide, they are not the only criterion when choosing a hotel. Personal preferences, individual experiences and recommendations also play an important role. Some smaller boutique hotels or family businesses deliberately decide against being categorised by DEHOGA in order to have more freedom for individual hotel concepts and personal design. Even without star classification, they offer excellent service and a unique atmosphere that is often lacking in large chain hotels.

We would describe our boutique hotel Louisa’s Place in Berlin as an excellent example of how hotels without an official 5-star rating can offer a comparable standard.

Boutique Hotel Louisa’s Place in Berlin: a comparable 5-star level

With our elegant suites, luxurious space and stylish atmosphere, we already fulfil many of the criteria of a 5-star hotel. The charm of the 1904 building – with its listed façade – is also reflected in the wrought-iron details around the house, ornate murals and the antique library. However, our hotel is particularly characterised by its personal touch and excellent guest service, which many friends of Louisa’s Place have appreciated for many years and many newcomers appreciate from their very first visit.

We want every guest to feel uniquely comfortable and welcome and therefore attach great importance to a high degree of individuality in our offer:

– We attach great importance to the quality of our service and our products.

– Our suites fulfil their definition and have a very generous amount of space and are divided into separate living and sleeping areas.

– In addition to 3.80 metre high ceilings and parquet flooring, the high-quality furnishings in the suites also include a fully equipped kitchen and modern SMART TVs.

– Our Louisa’s SPA offers a comprehensive wellness and fitness programme including a pool.

– The gastronomic offer of first-class restaurant cuisine and stylish bar rounds off the high-quality living experience.

– We attach great importance to taking into account the individual wishes and preferences of our guests. But at the same time familiar also a personal approach – because the relationship with our guests is at the heart of everything we do.

This shows that quality and hospitality are not always tied to the star rating, but can also stand out positively outside of this, which is also reflected in our numerous guest reviews.

With the Prussian Queen Luise as our namesake, known among other things for her friendliness and kindness and still revered today, especially in Berlin-Charlottenburg. As the Queen of Hearts, we at Louisa’s Place have no choice but to convince you of our 5-star service on your next visit!
